How to Choose a Cologne

A distinct scent for a man is a necessity these days. It’s a scent-based signature that’s lingers on everything you wear, and stays in the minds of everyone you meet. It sounds like a cliché, but it’s true. You’d be surprised at the kinds of compliments you can get once you stop smelling like beer and spray-deodorant and move on to something with a little more depth.

We've put together a list of things to be on the lookout for with respect to colognes and perfumes. From the construction of fragrances, to picking and wearing cologne for yourself, this guide will have you smelling less like mom’s basement and more like a grown man.

Fragrance Construction

First, colognes and other fragrances are constructed of top notes, middle notes, and base notes. These scents interact and work together to create the complete scent that you encounter. Most perfume houses guard their recipes and the composition of their fragrances carefully, but nearly all are made up of carefully layered scents.
  • Top Notes

The top notes are the first impression that the scent will give you, usually bold scents with a touch of the ethanol that the fragrance is mixed with. Adjectives like ‘crisp’, ‘fresh’ and ‘citrusy’ are common, and powerful extracts are usually used here. The top notes will not last very long, and give way to the middle notes.
  • Middle Notes

Soft floral notes are common here, so as to lessen the harsh impact of the ethanol. Middle notes usually last less than half an hour.
  • Base Notes

Base notes are the lasting scent that a fragrance leaves on you; the least harsh of all the notes, base notes are long lasting, subtle scents. The base notes first emerge about 30 minutes to an hour after you apply, and linger until you shower or change.
These notes together create the layered, complex story that colognes tell. Does the cologne start with a blast of fresh citrus, and then give way to a smoky woodsy note? Or does it start with a jolt of lavender that transforms into vanilla? Though these complex notes are probably only going to be picked up by trained perfumers, a basic understanding of these notes can give help you distinguish a mediocre cologne from an extraordinary one.

Picking A Scent

When picking a scent, one of the first things to consider is personal style and image. Try a few different scents and figure out what impression each one gives, and if it’s true to your own style. It’s also wise to go out and smell various colognes, write down your first impressions and top three, and then return on another occasion. Your sense of smell is easily overwhelmed at the perfume counter, and a break is essential to discerning what scents have a lasting impression on you over time.

Stores keep tester cards for you to blast with cologne so you can get a sample without leaving the store smelling like you fell into a vat of the stuff. Similarly, many places keep coffee beans around, as coffee acts as a palette refresher – a sort of reset button for your nose.

Once you’ve found a few you like, test them on your own skin. This is an important step, as colognes interact with your sweat, your body heat, and your individual body chemistry. There’s no telling how any single cologne might smell while you’re wearing it.

 Wearing Your New Scent

One of the most common problems with men and cologne is an utter cluelessness when it comes to how to apply it. Stick to the following tips and you’ll be fine:
  • The wrist and neck are ‘pulse points’ where your body generates the most heat, and the cologne will emanate outward from your body.
  • Cologne worn on the chest is kept away from the air, and will linger throughout the day and night.
  • Don’t hit yourself again if you can’t smell it. That’s the idea. It’s only supposed to be noticeable once you get up close and personal. Your sense of smell is weakest after waking up, so be careful with overzealous application.
  • Give yourself a quick refresher in the late afternoon if your cologne is fading and you think it’s going to be a long night. One spray ought to do it.
  • Don’t wear a powerfully scented deodorant with your cologne. Conflicting scents or unexpected interactions can smell unpleasant.
  • In the summertime, the combination of heat and sweat greatly amplifies the smell of your cologne; apply sparingly on those hot days.
Advanced Colognes & Fragrances
  • As you get more confident, you’re going to want to keep more than one fragrance. One for the office, one for nights out, one for special occasions.
  • Particularly sensitive noses will be able to pick out individual scents and be able to layer fragrances on top of their existing colognes. Scents like vanilla and cinnamon layer well.
Things To Watch Out For
  • Overwhelming base notes: Overpowering scents are undesirable. A too-strong base note is going to stick with you the rest of the day and annoy you (and your date) until you shower.
  • Powerful deodorants: There’s no telling how your new cologne might interact with your existing antiperspirant or deodorant. If that new bottle of cologne mixes badly with your Old Spice, consider switching to an unscented deodorant.
  • Patchouli: Common in colognes with a woody scent, patchouli base notes can transform and smell similar to camphor. If you’re testing something with this note, give it a few hours and see how it smells then.

Smell Good: Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Montauk

Andy Warhol Montauk, the world's first summer sunset cologne  , inspired by Andy Warhol's fantasy Montauk...where a quirkily quaint little fishing village greets the Studio 54 crowd. This fragrance is like no other.

Made with wild bergamot, white laurel, blueberry, hyacinth, lily of the valley, honeysuckle, amber, driftwood, silver maple and red oak.

This fragrance is great, particularly if you work with numbers.  The lily of the valley is said to improve attention to detail.

Getting your skin ready for the Spring

Many of us tend to hibernate all winter long, making our sun exposure pretty limited. So, with the first sign of sunny and warmer days, comes the call for a daily moisturizer upgrade. Here are a few that not only moisturize but protect!
It’s important not to forget that with the increase in body temperature, due to warmer weather, our bodies naturally begin to produce more oil from our sweat glands.  So, now is a great time to add an exfoliating product to your collection or a good after shave balm and moisturizer. Here are three great ones!

Maintaining Your Nails

In the realm of personal hygiene, your fingernails should rest somewhere between your breath and body odor. Nothing says "crude caveman" more than dirty, gnarled nails or jagged, bloody cuticles.

Tips

During your shower, push back your cuticles (the skin-like tissue covering the base of the nail) using the back of your thumbnail. This will keep your nails looking clean and your cuticles from getting caught on something and ripping.

After showering, your nails are soft and easier to trim with a pair of nail clippers. We recommend the "Ultra-Slim Stainless Steel Nail Clipper" by the German knife company, Zwilling. Just don't cut the nail shorter than the tip of the finger.
Never bite or pull off hangnails. Doing so will rip your hand's living tissue. Instead, use scissors to clip hangnails, leaving a small angle outward.
Filing the nails isn't always necessary, but is a practical way of finishing them to a smooth edge. An emory board like Mom uses would work, but you should really find one with a finer grit. Did you know they come in grades like sandpaper? We like Tweezerman's pocket file—with a built-in nail cleaner, long-lasting ceramic stone and travel-handy switchblade design, you really get your money's worth.
The occasional manicure by a professional will give you nice, even nails that can be easily maintained. But if the manicurist suggests a polish, ask for a buff instead.
And remember, nails need moisture just like skin. Rub lotion into your nails when moisturizing your hands. A good time for doing this? Right before bed.

Healthier Looking Skin Without Breaking the Bank

Are there any really good moisturizers for less than $60?  Of course there are!

More often than not, we are all guilty of believing that if a product is expensive, it must be the best.  Although that may be true in some instances for grooming products, the standard moisturizer shouldn't burn a hole in your wallet, especially since this is an essential daily use items.

Here are a few great face moisturizers that not only get the job done, but are concentrated enough so that you get more "bang" for your buck.

And of course, the most important part...less than $60!
  • Vitamin E Moisturizer by Malin+Goetz - $45
  • Skin Smoothing Cream by Demalogica - $39
  • Mult-Vitamin Day Balm by Eyre BioBotanics - $47
  • Instant Moisture Gel by Lab Series -$26

Winter Grooming

It seems that no matter where you are this winter season, it’s really cold. Even Florida is   having freeze warnings…

So since we have to adjust to the winter weather, and not the other way around, let’s make sure that your grooming regimen can handle this cold and dry time of year!
Hair – Conditioners help to replenish the natural oils in your scalp so this should be done at least twice a week. And, no matter what you style your hair with, always start with a moisturizing hair cream first.
Face – Do you shave?  If you do, protection is even more important during the winter months. Proper shaving prep is paramount!
Lips – Do you like the way sandpaper feels on your cheeks? Well, neither does your partner. A lip balm (ex. ChapStick) should always be kept handy.
Body – there is nothing worse than dry skin in the winter. Not to mention, the longer you keep your skin dry on a daily basis, the more difficult it is for your skin to re-balance once you start. So get a body lotion you like and stick with it!

When Grey Hair Comes

Sooner or later we’ll all have to deal with turning grey. While it might not top our list of hair concerns right now (yeah we’re looking at you, hair loss), going grey can be a real concern.
It all starts when the pigment which gives our hair color stops being produced – making the hair appear transparent. And it’s this transparent hair that stands out as grey amongst the healthy hair, lacking nutrients and often appearing stiff, brittle and dry. But enough geek speak, we all know what grey hair looks like but it’s about how you deal with it.

In terms of dealing with turning grey, most people fall into one of two camps. You either see grey hair as a sign of power,
maturity and sophistication and embrace your transformation into a ‘silver fox’, or you associate going grey with acquiring a free bus pass and picking up your pension.
Embrace the grey
While the knee jerk reaction for women is to reach for the hair dye, it seems that for men going grey isn’t always seen as a negative. It’s less about going grey and more about your attitude towards it – if you embrace grey hair with the confidence to pull it off then it can work in your favor.

First thing’s first,  pick a shampoo that works with your lighter grey tones and not against them. Many regular shampoos can cause grey hair to turn yellow, as the grey hair absorbs the colouration of the shampoo – not a strong look. But luckily there are specially formulated products like L’Oreal Professionnel Homme Grey and Redken For Men Silver Charge designed to enhance the look of your hair, offering moisture and shine without a yellow tone in sight.
In addition to choosing the right shampoo, your choice of hair style and the styling products you use also have a huge impact on your ‘silver fox’ status.  A close cropped cut can give you a definite air of masculine charm and accentuates your ‘salt and pepper’ look.  As will a short, sharp cut around the back and sides keeping it natural with texture and definition on the top, but this can obviously vary depending on your age and overall style.
The real key to growing old gracefully is not to fight it , but see how best to embrace it; the end result is that you will not only see a new you, but maybe an even better you.

How to Moisturize Like a Man

Equip your lips
.

The sheer volume of chap sticks and moisturizers available for your lips these days can be overwhelming. Cut through the chaff of medicated options and avoid anything loaded with beeswax.  Beeswax is great for candles but doesn’t benefit your lips. “Beeswax just clogs your pores and doesn’t hydrate your skin,” says NYC dermatologist Debra Jaliman. “Petrolatum is the only clinically-proven moisturizer for your lips—and it’s cheap. This is one area where I wouldn’t spend a lot of money.”
Upgrade your arsenal.
That thinner lotion that got you through the clement times might not be up to the challenge of fall, so reach for the heavy-duty stuff before the blustering winds can really chap your hide. Dr. Jaliman cautions against “playing catch-up once your skin dries out,” and recommends using a moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid, which removes toxins from cells to let the good stuff in and helps lock in the moisture your skin needs.
We said it: exfoliate!
Not only will the sloughing-off of dead skin make your body more touchable to those closest to you, but it’ll help you get the most out of those high-end products. “If you apply a moisturizer on top of dry, dead skin,” our expert says, “it will just sit there and not be absorbed by the skin that needs it most.” But don’t overdo it with harsh bacteria-fighting formulas. “People really wreck their skin with antibacterial body washes,” she says. “They come to me with all kinds of rashes and irritation. It’s overkill. Use a gentle, moisturizing formula with ceramides or glycerin instead.”
Take warm (not hot) showers.
While it might be tempting to chase away the cold with a piping hot shower, think twice before dialing up the heat. “Hot water will suck the moisture right out of your skin,” says Jaliman.
Use a pre-shave oil.
In order to avoid razor burn
caused by dry winter skin, oil your beard up before you shave it off.
Lotion up those hands.
Your hands rarely get a break from the weather—they are constantly exposed to the sun, wind and cold. And while rough paws might be the sign of a hardworking man, they can ruin a first impression in the boardroom and bedroom.

Choosing the proper hairbrush

Most folks  could care less about what type of hairbrush they use. However, choosing the right brush can promote healthier hair.
Boar bristle brushes are more densely packed so that the bristles can grab hold of sebum (the oil your scalp naturally produces), and spread it down the length of the hair shaft. This process creates more evenly moisturized hair and scalp, and also add a greater natural shine.
This type of stimulation and distribution of sebum has been  found to promote healthier hair growth!

Developing a winning smile

According to a recent University of North Carolina study… “Males with perfectly aligned pearly whites are associated with qualities such as dominance, strength, and social competance”.

So to help you develop a winning smile, here are a few safe and effective steps you can take:

Whitening Toothpastes
will lift superficial stains, scrubs off the daily residue left by coffee or red wine but won’t get rid of deeper discoloration 5 minutes a day $3.50 – $20 per tube

Halogen Lamp
most effective procedure to get noticeably whiter natural looking teeth can take up to an hour and a half (Repeat once a year)
Approx. – $600

Custom-fit Trays
will get your teeth about as white as the lamp will, but the peroxide will not penetrate as deep two visits to the dentist for molds and then two weeks of wearing the trays (Repeat every 6 mos.)
Approx. – $400

How to get a great haircut!

Communication! Communication! Communication!

Truthfully, the only way to get a great haircut is to explain what you want carefully. Barbers/stylist aren't mind readers. If you are having trouble verbalizing what you want, search the internet and magazines for a look that you feel "best" suits you. Pick your top two or three, and show them to your barber and let him/her make the final decision.

Most barbers appreciate when their clients have a picture of what they would like. Also, make sure your barber or stylist listens and can confidently communicate back to you how they are going to achieve that look for you.

Without proper communications you could have another surprise coming!

Groomed guys have better job prospects

What: Is a clean shaven face really the secret to career success? That seems to be the result of a new survey, where 90 percent of HR professionals said being well-groomed is more important than a firm handshake when it comes time for a job interview.

What They Say:“How you look has a direct impact on how you feel, your confidence and self-esteem,” said Mark Jeffries, business consultant, communications expert and author. “This is as true for guys actively seeking a job as it is for those who are currently employed and seek a competitive advantage. At the same time, seemingly small details, like a clean shave or a great-fitting—but not necessarily expensive suit—send important visual cues to others about your professionalism and confidence.”

What We Say: It might not seem fair that job applicants are judged based on looks, but it’s a harsh reality in today’s competitive job market. Looking sloppy sends a negative message to most employers that a candidate is lazy or doesn’t care. With so much at stake when it comes to landing a dream job, it’s worth it to pick up a razor on interview day, even if being clean shaven isn’t your regular look.

Putting your best face forward

3 ingredients to avoid when selecting a facial moisturizer

A beautiful face doesn't just happen, it has to be nurtured.

The one key item that every man should have in their grooming kit says expert barber and grooming consultant Craig Whitely, a and frequent contributor to Men's Health magazine, is a face moisturizer.

"Your skin will love you for it, and so will your friends and co-workers," said Whitely. "Trust me; no one likes to look at a dry face."

With the growing assortment of new grooming products on the market for men deciding on a moisturizer for your face can be a bit overwhelming. While there are many good products in all price ranges by a variety of brands here are three ingredients Whitely suggest you should always, always, always avoid when shopping for a facial moisturizer.

• Shea Butter – rich in fatty acids and vitamins like A, E and F; but, because it’s very thick, it’s better to use on the body and NOT the face.
• Lanolin Oil – prone to aggravating acne.
• Mineral Oil – creates a film on the skin which can trick your skin into thinking it’s actually hydrated. It’s also thick and clogs pores which may lead to breakouts.

Keeping it together during the dog days of summer

Late summer manscaping!

1. Keep facial hair light and trim. Nothing like ’stache or goatee sweat to sour your summer sexy. Also, remember to trim the hair at the back of your neck–no explanation necessary.

2. If you want the smooth Mr. Clean look across your entire body, try waxing. Don’t worry, all of your friends are doing it—they’re just not telling you. It’s a heavily guarded secret in the manscaping circles–do you actually think that there are men out there who are naturally smooth and hairless as a baby’s bottom? Surely, you jest….but if you are unable to withstand the prickly pain of waxing, invest in series of laser hair removal treatments. Same effect, longer time period.

3. Manicures and pedicures are essential to the soul–and to ensuring that your look is complete. Don’t worry—just make sure that the services are basic–no shiny buffing or clear coats needed. Clean nails and toes are always welcome in any summery situation (especially pool parties, bonfires, and beach bashes).

4. If you must tan, forego the tanning beds and use a sunless tanning lotion like Neutrogena Build-a-Tan® Gradual Sunless Tanning Lotion. Besides averting the direct risk of developing skin cancer by lounging in a tanning bed, it will provide a natural-looking transition from your frosty winter sheen to a bronze and browned demigod.
